So, Jake, what does the gay porn industry mean to you?

[Prologue]: “The question I am supposed to be answering in this article should be a simple one: ‘What does porn mean to you?’ But the question is complicated, as complicated as any answer I can come up with. Normally, when faced with a difficult question, I write around it. I revert to my philosophical training and take the via negativa. That is to say, I write about all the things that it isn’t in order to arrive at a simple way of describing what it is. In this case though, porn is and isn’t so many things that this approach simply won’t work. So, here’s two things that porn is to me and one thing that it is not.”

“1) Porn is a lens which allows me to see myself differently. I was at a shoot last week for Manifest Men, which is a website featuring muscle guys jerking off. I was surprised when they asked me to shoot with them because I don’t see myself as a muscle guy at all. The photographer would show me pictures of myself in his camera as he took them in different poses. I swear the camera captures me in a way that I never see when I look into a mirror. Every time I see a photograph of myself or watch one of my scenes, it’s like hearing my voice on a recorder. I think, ‘That’s not me.’ In that respect, I guess the lens analogy is pretty literal but it is also a figurative lens in that, it allows me to see myself as other people see me in a very extreme way. I have always, and still, think of myself as a slightly above average looking guy. I know that I’m not the Hunchback of Notre Dame but I also don’t think I’m Taylor Lautner. Yet day after day, fans write to me and pay me the most amazing, astonishing, and kind compliments; studios are constantly hiring me; people pay good money to see my shows on Randy Blue Live; and when I make an appearance people come up to have their picture taken with me and tell me they came from hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles away just to meet me. I am amazed every day that I have fans. I don’t know if I will ever cease to be amazed especially at their diversity, loyalty, and kindness.

2) Porn is an amazing opportunity and a social experiment. I just got back from 10 days in Costa Rica filming for Lucas Entertainment. I’ve had sex with super hot guys. There are life sized posters of me all over. My friends cannot go to Manhunt without seeing me in an ad. I get paid to have sex. This is fun! These aren’t the greatest opportunities though. The greatest opportunities fall under the realm of human experience. Very few people in society get to experience the things that I have described. That puts me and other porn stars in a unique category. I have a common shared experience with people who are very different from myself. Thus, when I go to the jungle of Costa Rica to make a movie, I am there with Brazilians and Argentinians and Hondurans and other Americans from totally different backgrounds than I come from. I meet smart people, kind people, escorts and hookers, people who dream of being actors, people looking for love and people who love kink. At my fingertips, in my phone, or on my Twitter I can reach an incredibly diverse and astonishingly varied group of human beings and we are a brotherhood. Some of us are humble and some of us are divas. Some of us are fiercely competitive and others refuse to compete. Some reflect deeply on the experience of having sex on camera for money and others seem to not think of it at all. We are bound in this experience and powerfully bound we are. The experience of making porn can be hot. It can be exciting. It can also be arduous. It is a variable experience but for me what does not vary is the power of the experience and its magnitude, both in terms of its permanence and its significance.

3) Porn is NOT just another job. ‘You have been hired because of your appearance.’ ‘You agree to perform sexual acts which will be recorded.’ These phrases are standard phrases which appear in most ‘Model Releases’ which are signed before a porn shoot. There isn’t another job where someone shoves a dick in your ass or you put yours in someone else’s. Almost every other job, even the most exciting of jobs, could arguably be called ‘just another job.’ Not porn. There are very few jobs which touch as many facets of one’s existence. I have to bring my whole self to a porn shoot: my mind, my body, my sexuality. Sure, I may be able to shut down my emotions with some degree of effectiveness but what I’m doing still affects me even if I don’t realize it. I carry what takes place during a shoot home with me- the good experiences and the bad. The pride and the anxiety of wanting to perform better and better every time. When I say, ‘I’m going to work’ that literally means: ‘I’m going to fuck someone and get paid for it.’ It’s not just another job. Whether in your opinion it is better, or worse, is irrelevant- it is in act and essence different than everything else.

Working in porn has been an unforgettable experience. I’ve worked with amazing studios, talented directors and had the privilege to work with some truly great scene partners. Although I am sometimes a critic of ‘the industry and its mechanisms,’ I have met mentors and friends that will be with me for the rest of my life. I met my amazing boyfriend through porn. I’ve also been given opportunities that very few people are privileged to have. For those experiences and gifts, I am truly grateful.”
